“I started doing more clothing five
years ago and quickly saw it was going to work,” said Hargis. “We’ve already outgrown the space for apparel
and soon I’ll be adding a gift shop with
changing rooms to accommodate the
increase in business.”
Seasonal items, from weather-related
merchandise to holiday products, often
boost profits, especially if retailers pay
attention to how their customers shop.
“During snowy winter months we actu-
ally sell just as many pairs of sunglasses
as we do during the peak of summer,”
said Scheeler. “In years past we moved
our sunglasses racks to the back of the
store during the winter, but this year
we left them near the front and that
certainly generated more turns for us.”
Fitzpatrick added that the weather
dictates how much winter accessories
EZ GO moves. However, he stays away
from Christmas and other holiday mer-
chandise. “Anything with Santa Claus is
a markdown waiting to happen,” he said.
Yet over at Kings River Country
Stores, Christmas-themed merchandise has proved popular. “We do even
more seasonal now than ever before
because of high sales,” said Hargis.
Like the rest of the general merchandise category, the key to success in seasonal items is knowing your customers.
