Think of true cloud solutions as the electrical
grid. I need juice, I get juice. I don’t call the electric
company and say, “Hey folks, I am going to run
my AC and my hair dryer at the same time; can
you shoot me some juice?” I need it, I get it. (If
you want a great read on utility-based computing,
I highly recommend The Big Switch written by
Nicholas Carr. He nailed it.)
I would be totally remiss if I didn’t mention
security. When your salesperson tells you the solution is “in the cloud,” you may want to drill in to see
if your critical data is being stored in a shared environment or if it will be isolated. Too often you will
find that your solution will be either a stand-alone
server dedicated to you, or your data will exist in a
multitenant environment—none of which is extensible or expandable on demand.
I also recommend you get, in writing, policies around patching and maintenance of these
so-called “cloud” solutions. If the vendor can’t
supply it, you might want to consider going elsewhere for the service.
