Take It Home
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, right?
Oh, who are we kidding? The whole point of the
NACS Show is to take stuff home with you.
If you went to the NACS Show this year, you
likely lugged home a suitcase a little heavier with
samples from the expo, or carried a bit of a hang-
over from one
too many drinks
the night before
you left town.
And if you were
lucky, maybe your
wallet felt a bit
bulkier after some
winnings at the
fleeting. The real
morsels came in
the form of all the
in your head or
a business card
representing a new, potentially profit-inducing,
business relationship. These are things you defi-
nitely don’t want to leave in Vegas.
The big takeaway for me at this year’s Show
was the budding possibility for our channel — for
both suppliers and retailers — to take charge of
refreshing the image of the convenience store
industry. To change the negative perception of
your stores as places to buy junk food and secure
a dead-end job, to view us as hubs of healthful
options and centers of career possibilities.
Opening General Session keynote speaker, jour-
nalist David Freedman, talked about how junk food
can end obesity (for real!) and how our industry can
be heroes in the effort to develop a healthier society:
“The message is going to sink in. People are going to
get it, and that’s going to change things for you guys.”
Finally, on the last day of the Show, new
NACS Chairman Steve Loehr announced not
only Kwik Trip’s affiliation with the Partnership
for a Healthier America, but also the news that
Sheetz and the Marine Corps Exchange have also
joined by making commitments to expand their
healthier food offerings and promote better-for-
you choices. You can read more about all of these
presentations on page 28 of this issue.
But I’m only one of 23,624 attendees at the
Show this year and this is what I took home with
me. Imagine the countless other ideas, connections and new products the other 23,000+ people
brought back. It’s amazing all the good stuff that
can be found at the NACS Show!
Perhaps a new way to look at the Vegas slogan is
this: What happens in Vegas, should never stay in
Vegas cause it’s too good not to take home and share
with your colleagues and implement in your stores.
Too long, huh?
